In 1999 the Oregon Legislature authorized the use of the Oregon Pesticide Use Reporting System (PURS). In 2008 alone, residents of Oregon filed 343,565 reports of pesticide use. These reports indicate that over 19,696,784 pounds of active ingredient pesticides were used in Oregon in 2008. Issues cited by the Oregon Legislature in response to PURS include: reporters had inadequate identification of product used, reporters lacked the skill levels required to report online, and reporters did not understand that the reporting deadline was mandatory.
